Size, Height and Passenger Capacity

Total take-off weight is the key factor in answering the question: how big is a hot air balloon?

Hot air balloons are very large aircraft, in some cases gigantic. To work out how big a balloon needs to be, aeronautical engineers must take into account a number of factors, which we explain below.

The volume, width and height of a balloon are determined mainly by the weight it must be able to lift. The greater the weight, the bigger the balloon.

To decide how big a balloon should be, the engineers who design it consider, among other things, the number of passengers the basket will carry. The more passengers, the larger and heavier the basket, and therefore the greater the total weight the balloon must lift.

The more weight to lift, the more hot air is needed and the larger the envelope (the balloon fabric) must be.

The number of burners also depends on the volume of the envelope. A larger envelope needs more burners to heat the air inside.

More burners also require more fuel on board (propane gas) to heat the air inside the balloon.

As you can see, all the extra weight we add as passengers board is directly related to the size of the envelope needed to lift it.

In short: the more passengers, the bigger the hot air balloon.

The following chart shows the approximate relationship between the number of passengers and the size of the balloon.

Size of a hot air balloon

How big is the smallest hot air balloon in the world?

About 10 metres high. These are single-seat sports balloons with just the pilot on board, flown for the pleasure of flying. Its measurements are colossal: 750,000 cubic feet of volume, 2,800 metres of fabric, 3,100 metres of load tapes joining the fabric panels that give the balloon its shape, 17,000 metres of thread to sew all the fabric, 40 metres high and 32 metres wide.

Dimensions of a 32-passenger hot air balloon

What size are hot air balloons in Spain?

Hot air balloon flights in Spain generally use balloons with a capacity of between 2 and 19 passengers. Under European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) rules, any balloon carrying more than 19 passengers must have one pilot plus one crew member on board. In practice, companies like ours that offer hot air balloon flights use balloons ranging from 2 to 19 passengers.

There are several ways to take a hot air balloon flight: from shared flights, where the basket is shared with other passengers who have booked the same flight date, to family flights, where you choose your travel companions and the balloon flies exclusively for you. With EoloFLY, you choose the size of the balloon.

Total take-off weight is the key factor in answering the question: how big is a hot air balloon?
